Adopt

Adopting is the longest commitment on this page: ten to fifteen years, sometimes more. A dog costs time every day, a vet budget that climbs with age, and planning for every absence, every move, every life change. Shelters are full of dogs adopted on impulse by people who hadn't thought about what came next: in France alone, shelter structures recorded more than 300 000 animals taken in during 2025 alone, and the national study of 800 structures reports tens of thousands of refusals for lack of space. Adopting with full awareness is already fighting against abandonment.

Adopt close to home first. Shelters in your country are overflowing with dogs waiting — often adults and large breeds, less in demand than puppies. An adult dog has an advantage a puppy doesn't: its character is known, the shelter can tell you who it really is. Visit, come back, walk the dog several times before deciding. A serious organization will ask you as many questions as you ask it: that's a good sign.

Adopting from abroad is also possible, to most countries. The dog travels microchipped and rabies-vaccinated, with the health documents required by the destination country. Timelines are mainly driven by the rabies vaccine, which requires a waiting period before departure. Entry rules vary by country and change regularly: check those that apply where you live before committing, and ask the organization which documents it provides.

A street dog is not a couch dog gone wrong. It arrives with reflexes built outdoors: wariness, resource guarding, noise sensitivity. Most adapt very well. It takes weeks, sometimes months, and support.

Questions to ask a serious organization, here or abroad: how does the dog behave with other dogs, children, strangers? Has it ever lived indoors? What are the real fees and what do they cover? What happens if the adoption doesn't work out? A reliable organization answers that last question without hesitation and takes its dog back.

A reality unique to the Emirates: every wave of expatriate departures leaves behind abandoned dogs, tied to posts or released into the desert, and shelters are overwhelmed. Leaving with your dog is, however, possible and regulated: the rules allow the export of two dogs per person per year, the paperwork is obtained from MOCCAE, and IPATA-certified carriers organize the trip from start to finish. What is missing is never the solution, it is the planning: the process should start months before departure, not the week of the move. If you are leaving, leave together. And if you are staying, the shelters below need foster homes for the dogs others have left behind.
