Foster at home

A foster home houses a dog until adoption. It is temporary, from a few weeks to several months. The organization covers veterinary costs and often food. You bring time, space and patience.

It is the rarest link in the rescue chain. A saturated shelter cannot take one more dog, even if it has the money to treat it. A foster home frees up a place, immediately.

Who it suits: someone with time, suitable housing, and who accepts that the dog will leave. The main risk is emotional, not material. Many fosters end up adopting their first dog. Organizations call that a failure, with affection.

What you must get in writing before committing: who pays for what, who decides on veterinary care, and the planned duration of the fostering.
