Assistance dogs

Those who help, and what it takes to train them.

This is the only topic on this site where the dog gives help instead of receiving it. An assistance dog guides a blind person, picks up what a hand can no longer grasp, alerts before a seizure, calms an autistic child. It restores an autonomy nothing else can.

What is less known: training a guide dog costs about 25,000 euros, funded almost entirely by donations, and the dog is given free of charge to its beneficiary. Training lasts eighteen to twenty months, waiting lists stretch over years, and in France, out of nearly two million visually impaired people, only about 1,500 are accompanied by a guide dog. The bottleneck is not demand. It is funding and foster families.

Because before school, every future assistance dog spends its first year with a volunteer family, who socialises it and teaches it the basics. It is a singular commitment: raising a puppy knowing it will leave, for someone who is waiting for it. The schools train, guide and closely follow these families.

Three ways to act for this cause: fund or sponsor the training of a named dog, become a foster family for a puppy in pre-training if a school exists near you, and enforce their access rights, since refusing entry of a public place to an assistance dog is illegal in many countries.

A benchmark for giving wherever you are: Assistance Dogs International and the International Guide Dog Federation accredit serious schools worldwide. A school accredited by either federation applies verified standards of training and welfare.
